Multimedia Indexing over the Web
نویسندگان
چکیده
There has been work on database systems that can retrieve multimedia objects by their content. We are extending this work by using the World Wide Web as source and storage for multimedia objects much like current text search engines do for textual information. A system that can access all types of multimedia objects by their content is a formidable task and improvements are constantly being made to indexing techniques. We have taken an important rst step in demonstrating the viability of this technique while laying the groundwork for a larger, more capable system. We have implemented a simple indexing scheme while concentrating on building the infrastructure to support this system. Our system can retrieve references to images on the WWW, index those images, and store those images using spatial access methods. We then use query by example to nd a set of images on the WWW that resemble our query image. Due to its design, it is easy to include additional context features, to substitute diierent indexing schemes, and add other types of multimedia to our system like time sequences, voice and video.

A Unified Approach to Indexing Multimedia on the Web
Indexing multimedia Web documents can be regarded as an important part of Web engineering, a concept first proposed [19] by one of the authors and his collaborators in 1998 at the World Wide Web WWW7 conference in Brisbane, Australia. Contentbased indexing of multimedia has always been a challenging task. The enormity and diversity of the multimedia content on the World Wide Web (WWW) adds anot...
متن کاملWeb-enabled advanced multimedia systems
Most of the multimedia objects distributed over the WorldWide Web are unstructured or poorly meta-indexed to be of any use in retrieval tasks formulated by users in natural language queries. In general these dynamic multimedia objects are manually annotated in terms of textual documents. The high costs involved in manually indexing multimedia objects, which grow in volume and are becoming ever ...
متن کاملSemantics for Multimedia on the Web
The vision of the Semantic Web entails that large amounts of multimedia data should be annotated with semantic meta data. Current technology for content-based image interpretation is too limited for automated annotation of visual material. Techniques used by image search engines are also very poor and are unlikely to be improved in the near future. So, human annotations are required to make lar...
متن کاملMultimedia Systems: Content Based Indexing and Retrieval
Multimedia data, such as text, audio, images and video, is rapidly evolving as the main form for the creation, exchange, and storage of information in the modern era. Primarily, this is attributed to rapid advances in the three major technologies that determine its growth: VLSI technology that is producing greater processing power; broad-band networks (ISDN, ATM, etc) that are providing much hi...
متن کاملImage and Video Searching on the World Wide Web
The proliferation of multimedia on the World Wide Web has led to the introduction of Web search engines for images, video, and audio. On the Web, multimedia is typically embedded within documents that provide a wealth of indexing information. Harsh computational constraints imposed by the economics of advertising-supported searches restrict the complexity of analysis that can be performed at qu...
